Woophy

Most people have heard of Flickr, the photo site where you can join for free and upload your photographs, to be shared or viewed by other members and visitors. It is a useful place to store your photographs, safe from computer meltdowns which can lose a lot of digital camera shots if you haven't saved them to long term storage on a CD or similar medium. With film, there was always the negative if prints got lost or damaged, now with digital we can lose all our work in an instant, so best store them at least twice.

Other sites insist on you using Flickr if you want to upload shots to their site; you upload them to Flickr first and then tell the other site where they are. Which goes to make Flickr an important site for a number of reasons, but to me, it's pretty soul-less, I don't get any sense of humans there, and no sense of community either.

Woophy is another matter. With Woophy you do the same thing, upload your photographs, but then they can be commented on by other members and given a rating from 1 to 5. The rating is trivial; what one person loves another may hate, but the comments on Woophy are always constructive and helpful, always encouraging. There's a real sense of photographers gathered together for no other reason than to see each others work, and help each other take better photographs.

There are both professional and amateur photographers on Woophy, and it really doesn't matter who is which, there is no ellitism, just an honest desire to help others. Advice is free.

I can while away an hour any time looking at other people's photographs on Woophy; there are many stunning shots there, and will sometimes leave comments if I feel they are deserved. I am also keen to read others' reactions to mine, it's always good to know that others appreciate your particular photographer's 'eye'.

I would recommend Woophy to anyone who likes to take photographs. It costs nothing and is a lovely friendly site with some great people.
