Wikisearch
There is now a new search engine available, created by Jimmy Wales, the people's internet entrepreneur who created Wikipedia. It's called Search Wikia , and has been rumoured to be a Google-killer. Like Wikipedia, it relies on all of us to help make it work. Search Wikia uses a mixture of automated search algorithms and a Digg or Qassia-style voting system to produce results that real people can contribute to. The founder of Sarch Wikia said 'Search is part of the fundamental infrastructure of the Internet. And we are making it open source. Wikia Search will start to change search from being proprietary, top-down, and closed.' The website's social aspect includes user-membership accounts, where members can list their special interests and as a result appear in a sidebar when somebody searches a subject relevant to them. The intention is to personalise the web and connect people with similar interests or particular expertise. Each page of results is topped by a 'Mini Article'... a Wikipedia-style summary, written and edited by users. It's still very much in Beta at the moment, [searches are crap] but, as we know, these things can grow exponentially when people hear about them and start to contribute. So watch out for Search Wikia, and maybe even login, sign up if you wish and contribute. The thing about these open source initiatives is they succeed or fail due to whether people take them to their hearts or ignore them, democracy in action! The giants making vast profits don't like them of course, but why would they?
