What's the point of passwords?
Am I alone in having constant trouble with passwords? Even when I've written it down [something that we are constantly warned against] and type it in correctly, there's an odd-on chance it will be rejected. Or the email address will be rejected, trouble is the message is always 'Your user name/email address or password are incorrect' so is it both or one? Which one? We try again, try another email address [I mean, we all have several right?] try the old password, check it, try it again. Why do sites which aren't about our personal finances or national security have all this password security? Why should a blogging site care? Sometimes it feels like I'm trying to access the Bank of England or Fort Knox. Is there even the remotest of chances that someone else would wish to login as me to a blogsite and write something untypical! Would I care? So common is the forgetting of passwords, that the forgotten password pages are probably the most used on a lot of sites, and some make it so much more difficult than others to access one's account. I just spent fifteen minutes trying to log into bloglogs, where I apparently have an account because I had to open a Yahoo account because Yahoo own Flikr and I needed a Flikr account because I wanted to post a few pics somewhere and they insisted on you having a Flikr account! So why wasn't the link in the email from Yahoo capable of logging me in? I arrive at the Yahoo site where nothing works, it maintains my login is wrong - either the email address/user ID or the password, they aren't letting on. I had to answer some questions, use my original email address - by a process of elimination - and get sent a link to reset the password, reset it to what it was/supposed to be previously, then login to Flikr and lo and behold password/login ID not recognised! Would I like to merge accounts? Yes if it makes it easier. Several more steps and Congratulations, you have merged your accounts and can now log in using your Yahoo login... phew, getting perilously close to seeing a page that actually has my details on it! Finally, twenty minutes later, I am on my mybloglog page which contains nothing except a 'Welcome to Bloglogs' message as I never intended to use it - it's just another social networking/blogging site, they all seem to be the same, a place to hang out and amass thousands of 'friends' who want you to look at their blog page, and add them as your 'friend'. I've forgotten why I wanted to go there by now, but, satisfied that I have at least sorted out the logging in, I give up and move on to Qassia where at least I can write to my heart's content. Sometimes I think the only purpose of the net is to waste our time; millions of hard working, busy people desperately writing to each other for what reason? Is it a substitute for having real friends we can actually meet in the flesh and have a coffee with? Someone I know has one password which she uses for everything, that way at least she can't forget it. Of course if anyone ever got hold of it they could access all her bank accounts, but among the billions online is it worthwhile for anyone to do that? And how would they? I use variations of a basic set of words which don't change, but I'm forced by doubt to change them around each time I'm asked to create a password. Which isn't a whole lot better than sticking with the same one as anyone guessing I do that could cycle the words until they got it right. But what would it gain them? My bank are so paranoid they rarely let me see my accounts without a good deal of hassle, so hardly likely to let someone else look who didn't know my inside leg measurement, my mother's aunt's maiden name, my most memorable year, the place I was born and what I prefer for lunch. Probably couldn't prevent a determined hacker doing whatever they wanted though. |
