Websites for small businesses
Many small business owners have thought up to not that websites were for big companies, those selling products online, bloggers and enthusiasts, and had no relevance to them, whether their trade was plumbing, painting and decorating, tree surgery, car mechanics, gardening, or any one of the hundreds of trades plied by self employed workers. That may have been true up to now, but with more and more people getting an online presence, the chance of any of these trademen and women missing out on work because they don't have a website, is increasing. The problem for them is, how to go about it and get a website, while understanding nothing of the process or computers in general, without being stung for a huge amount of money by 'experts' with a lot of technical jargon they don't understand. They can google a variety of terms such as 'websites for small business', but these will bring up thousands of companies across the planet from the reasonably priced to the incredibly expensive, with no way for the novice to choose between them. With this in mind I decided to create a site which might appeal to the average small business owner with a limited budget, simple and straightforward, no frills, gizmos, widgets or Flash animations, just a basic website with a few linked pages in which information about them can be presented attractively to inform their potential customers of their ability to do the job, where and how to find them, what they charge, and reflecting their professionalism as a tradesman/woman. I set it up with a series of templates which can be scrolled through, each presenting the same information in different ways. These can be customised for each business, with input from the owner on what they want to say along with any pictures they may have which would enhance the site - a picture is worth a thousand words is still true, but only if appropriate and of acceptable quality. Now there is just the problem of letting small business owners looking for a way of getting online to find it! No small task as many know, and usually a hard slog to even get on the first page of Google. Of course, one can let people know locally with cards, leaflets, posters even, and that old standby, word-of-mouth, but that's a small number of people, and there's a wide world out there and doubtless millions of would-be website owners searching... |
