VW Microbus/Camper - the perfect getaway vehicle
When I bought my first VW Microbus in 1968 from someone who had driven it all over Morocco and Algeria, I had no idea it was going to become the iconic hippy vehicle of the sixties; it just seemed like a groovy vehicle with possibilities of freedom, the open road and happy daze. Soon after, I got a copy of The Idiot's Guide to Keeping your VW alive, an astonishingly detailed book which took every newbie through every mechanical operation they might ever want to do, or have to do, with the aim of empowering [although it wasn't a term used then] the owner of one of these splendid vehicles to be self sufficient. It worked. As long as you followed the directions to the letter, step by step, you could do anything from a basic service to removing the engine. What a liberation! I happily tackled jobs I would never have thought myself capable previously. I became a firm believer in DIY. The first one I owned was the early model split windscreen with side opening hinged doors. A delight, but underpowered, and with a full load it could be a struggle getting up the steeper hills on a 1100cc engine. The side doors were perfect for camping, opening out to an outside area where food could be consumed or a fire lit. It took us all over the country and to the Isle of Wight music festivals, first of their kind. The next was a later model with sliding side door, a full windscreen and a 1400cc engine. Much easier on the hills, and it too went to a few festivals, and idyllic spots for overnight stays. Whenever I see a VW bus pass, especially the split windscreen ones [of which fewer and fewer are surviving, but those that do are so well loved they look like it's still the sixties] I feel a wave of nostalgia. The modern version is just a van, no soul, no promise, just another boring utilitarian vehicle for the noughties. |
