Vinyl
With the advent of the CD, vinyl records were doomed to disappear, and now with the advent of easy coppying and CD burning, and also CD printing on desktop colour printers, the stage is set for millions of vinyl LPs to be copied and disposed of. Of course, second hand records have been traded since the days they were invented. Second hand record shops have always been akin to antiquarian booksellers; full of esoteric items, unheard of genres, exciting finds, and bargains. My record collection spans the sixties, seventies and eighties, with many highly sought collectors records and a lot of common stuff that was sold in the first real mass market in music which exploded in the sixties. But now, forty years later, even ordinary records are worth from a few pounds to hundreds, but valuation can be a very hit and miss affair, so bargains can still be got. I decided to set up a site to sell my collection from, rather than just selling the lot for a knock down price, or, as some people advised a few years ago, bin them. http://www.oneworldnet.co.uk/Records/ has a wide selection to choose from for those who collect old LPs, or can be a place to find that record the wife/husband had wanted for years soon after they found it was discontinued. Or a record lost way back then can bring back fond memories. I've sold a few of those. Mostly I don't worry about what 'real collectors' would sell or buy them for; I have a rough idea of their relative value - such as the Bob Marley Zippo Lighter sleeve of Burnin' - and am open to offers, or a bit of haggling. I want people to feel they have what they wanted at a good price, and for me to feel I got a reasonable price for something I've carefully nurtured for four decades and which still contains stunning musical invention. |
