Unicode
Unicode typefaces are typefaces which contain a larger than usual range of characters; with letters, digits, glyphs, symbols, ideograms, logograms, which are included in the standard Universal Character Set, UCS, derived from many different languages and scripts from around the world. Unlike most conventional computer fonts, which are specific to a particular language - for instance East European languages] and contain only a small subset of the UCS characters, these fonts attempt to include many thousands of possible characters, so that they can be used as a single typeface across multi-lingual documents. Some Unicode fonts have been created, such as Arial Unicode and Lucida Sans Unicode, but the two most populat typesetting programs, Pagemaker and Quark Xpress, can't access the extended characters. Some can be got by using Symbol font, others with Greek font and yet more with the Extended Maths sets, but still others, and the one I need is bound, by Sod's law, to be among them, just can't be accessed any way, and I spend hours trying. Given the importance of text in communication, and the necessity with a global internet to be able to print/display in any language, it's imperative that basic fonts to display everything in every software program are made available. Then we'll see the end of websites which look as if they've been attacked by killer £££££s or ?????? replacing perfectly good characters which the browser just can't handle, and emails which garble text to the point where it is sometimes unreadable. And then there's Chinese. |
