Twitchy legs preventing sleep
By Peter Simmons
For some time years ago I suffered from occasional sleeplessness. I hesitate to call it insomnia as that sounds too much like a syndrome, I just couldn't relax enough to doze off, mostly because I had twitchy legs; I constantly had to move my leg position, stretch them out, bend them. You get the picture. Twitchy legs is, I believe, a syndrome. One night I began to develop a method of dealing with it. I focused all my attention, my consciousness, on my toes and mentally imagined the muscles relaxing, moving up to the feet and dealing with each muscle in turn I slowly moved up my body, relaxing each muscle as I went. Nothing else was in my head by this point, not even the desire to relax and sleep. My consciousness was centred in the particular muscle I was relaxing as I made my languorous way upwards. In the morning I figured it must have worked. On any occasion after that I needed to overcome fidgety brain syndrome, I repeated the process, often getting no further than the knees before drifting off. It doesn't always work; my mind can be in an unfit state to fully relax and as a result the twitch returns. Then an alternative can be quinine, available in tonic water. This is a well-known treatment for muscle cramps and was the reason it was added to carbonated water by the British in India, who, because of the excess sweating their unaclimatised bodies indulged in, lost a lot of mineral salts in the process and were prone to cramps. If the method of mental control doesn't work for you, you could try a tonic before bedtime instead!

It's that old "relaxation" issue. You can't sleep if you can't get relaxed. Nor can you sleep if your brain is going 100 mph. I know.
Good suggestions-the use of the mind, and sometimes, something more physical, to overcome the sleeplessness problem. My legs do occasionally cramp up when I'm in bed.

It's even simpler than the mental wizadry. Before you retire for the night, or when the problem persists. Stand by your bed, do 30 "Tippy-Toes" followed by 5 of the same, but really slowly. Off to bed and we find it works every time. A cold bed is often the cause due to slow circulation.
Is this the same as when your leg sometimes unexpectedly kicks out? I don't think it is but I've always wondered what causes that.

Well it must be connected as both are muscle-related. But rather than actually kicking out, it's more a feeling of tension in the legs as if they need to kick out! Gets to the point when you have to move them or go nuts.
Thank you, Peter. I'll try this tonight. I've tried everything else. So tonight .. tippy toes and focusing on relaxing muscles from toes up ... no more twitchy legs!
Unfortunately I'm finding I can't sleep well at night due to a pain in my shoulder and arm. Getting treatment from an osteopath which will hopefully put things right. Probably all down to too much time sat at the computer.

The 8 ounces of quinine water at 8 PM works for me. I just wish I'd know about it sooner.
