The Post Office
One of the long term results of the hateful Thatcher is the obsession in British society now with money, profit and profitability. This is applied to everything including the Post Office, which first had its more profitable enterprises opened up to competition so that entrepreneurs could profit from people's need to post things, and has been expected to show a profit, or at least to not show a loss. The whole idea of service has thus been thrown out. No longer is government there to cater for the population's needs, now government has a managerial role, managing UK Plc. The Post office is said to be 'losing' several million pounds a week, where previously it was accepted that a service of use to everyone, some might say vital, had a cost. I wonder how the police are going to show a profit, and whether they will be opened up to competition, hiving off some of the more easy and profitable tasks to Group 4 and other 'security' companies. Oh, yes, they already did that! And the prison service. The income of these entrepreneurs grabbing their piece of the national 'services' come from tax payers, all of us. What next? Perhaps parliament could be privatised and put out to tender. The present shower are much too expensive, do a poor job and are constantly in the red. A free trade alternative could cut costs just like the maintenance crews on the railways - another area which has been privatised beyond any chance of culpability - and let's face it, no one could do a worse job of running the country than any of the current choices of political gangs. |
