The Ozone Hole hasn't gone away

We don't hear about it these days in the media, and you'd be forgiven for thinking that the holes in the ozone layer was a worry from the past and had disappeared now. How wrong you'd be, it's just that the media find it hard to concentrate on more than one thing, and as climate change has come to dominate our thinking in the last few years, so they have forgotten about the ozone hole.

Each year for the past few decades during the Southern Hemisphere spring, chemical reactions involving chlorine and bromine cause ozone in the southern polar region to be destroyed rapidly and severely. This depleted region is known as the ozone hole, another hole appears over Europe [and the northern hemisphere] every summer. Ozone levels in Europe are changing. Emissions of ozone precursors from Europe (NOx, CO and non-methane hydrocarbons) have been substantially reduced over the last 10–15 years, but changes in ozone levels cannot be explained by changes in European emissions alone.

Ozone loss was first detected in the stratosphere over the Antarctic. Although mid-latitude and Arctic depletion has also been observed, the loss is most dramatic in the lower stratosphere over the Antarctica continent, where nearly all the ozone is destroyed over an area the size of Antarctica within a layer in the lower stratosphere that's many km thick.

Ozone-destroying chemicals are long-lasting and take time to travel up to the stratosphere. Chemicals released years ago are still present in the atmosphere.

So, if you thought it had gone away, think again. High sunbloc factor cream is recommended still for any unavoidable extended exposure to sunlight, and it's best to wear clothing as well, especially small children. Incidence of skin cancer got so high in Australia that a law was passed making it illegal to go on the beach without being covered up. It could be many decades before the holes in the ozone layer finally close up.
