The News is now anodyne, trivial and repeated over and over
The news as presented on UK TV has become in the past year utterly boring, anodyne, safe and repeated incessently all day. When 24 hour news arrived, many thought it would mean a broader span of stories, more newsworthy events covered across the world, more choice, more variety. Instead of this we have 24 hour news which repeats a small collection of stories, usually no more than six, over and over throughout 24 hours. It's a TB station no one would stay tuned to for more than fifteen minutes, after that you're back to where you started. The same is true of BBC and Sky, which both seem to run the same stories, and often with the same or very similar camera shots, watching one is much like watching the other. At the time when the prime minister has PMQs [Prime Miniuster's Questions] in Parliament, the same image is shown on three adjacent channels on the set top box; BBC 24, Parliament and Sky News. Some choice this preoliferation of channels has brought! Unless a huge story materialises, such as the Tsunami, Diana's death or the twin towers, 24 hour news just means repetition. With the big events it comes into its own, and becomes unmissable as the story updates with live feeds coming straight into your home. But for the rest of the time, it's not something to watch a lot of. |
