The Coffee Whore Pt 2
The subject of coffee is so much more complex than how you like yours. Especially to us coffee addicts, for it is an addicitve drug, or rather it contains one. As such demand is robust and drives supply, with people willing to pay a lot of money for their coffee as Starbucks and others have discovered to their profit. This also means there is a knock on effect in the environment; wherever you get a mono-culture crop, wildlife tends to have a bad time, land can be lost to nature. These are all issues that have to be addressed. Should coffee be put on the UN's danerous drugs list and national police forces utilised to restrict coffee consumption? This would not only affect the growers around the world but would immediately give rise to a criminal web which would continue to move coffee to its customers, albeit with a premium price to facilitate the illegal act. Much like cocaine at oresent in fact, and as Colombia is one of those few countries which grows both coca and coffee, their criminals should be onto a winner. Picture of US helicopter gunships hosing coffee plantations with napalm springs to mind. But left legal, and perhaps other drugs legalised too, how would they all be controlled and regulated so as to do least harm to humans AND the environment? It would seem natural to buy up the world stocks of opium for the medical establishments of the worls to conert into morphine, still the most effective painkiller known and used widely. Coffe could be allowed to continue as now, with perhaps more connoiseur coffee suppliers which might also sell marijuana brands as well, tea too. Doctors would have to prescribe really dangerous drugs as a prelude to treatment. There would be no profit in any of it and drugs would start to lose their appeal to criminals. I think I need a coffee now. |
