Russian Election
There's an election in Russia. The new President will be Dmitry Medvedev, ex-president Putin's chosen inheritor. Students of democracy will see the contradiction in those two statements, but apparently most Russians don't, they are said to be turning out in record numbers to vote. But the poor Russians have never known democracy, having moved from the dictatorship of the Romanovs, to a socialist state-dictatorship lorded over by a bunch of people equally as repulsive as the Tzars, and then to a capitalist dictatorship where they are happy [it seems] to live under the ex-secret police [KGB] chief. Russia remains an inscrutable, tightly-controlled and miserable place where a sustantial percentage of the population are permanently drunk, yet government spokesmen talk of a Russian renaissance and hold spurious pretend elections which the rest of the world are supposed to accept as evidence that Russia has changed. It hasn't, and probably never will. |
