Round Britain Powerboat Race
The Round Britain Powerboat Race is currently ongoing [June 30th 2008] and it got me thinking. In this point in time with climate change on everyone's lips, politicians falling over each other to appear more environmentally friendly, and the need dawning that we need to reduce our emmissions drastically if we are to stand a chance of survival as a species, the rich boys have to play with their toys. Unconcerned with the danger to marine life from these lethal weapons, with whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and breeding sea birds off the Welsh coast [and presumably other parts of our coast] threatened by these self-obsessed, obscenely-rich parasites at play. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_west/7467547.stm , they care nothing either about the fuel wasted in craft that do two miles to the gallon. That's 1600 miles [length of race] divided by 2 [MPG] = 800, multiplied by 48 [number of powerboats competing] which comes to a staggering 38,400 gallons of fuel burned up so a few rich can get a thrill - not to mention the accompanying support craft and fleets of vehicles with accodation and food that inevitably accompany an event such as this, the convoys of BBC and other media vehicles, boats and helicopters, none of them fuel efficient, which are following every mile, the police and coastguard who have to be on duty, plus the jets that brought them all to the UK and delivered their boats and supplies to the starting line. While motorists trying to get to work to earn a living and support their families are advised to car share to save fuel or get the bus, pay congestion charges and parking fines and are generally made to feel responsible almost single handed for climate change, it's another world for the rich. Perhaps they think they live on another planet to the rest of us. Perhaps they should. What's certain is they will suffer equally when climate change bites deeper, and, as Bob Dylan sang 'when you ain't got nuthin, you got nuthin to lose', ... the rich have a lot to lose so will suffer accordingly, the obscenely rich even more so. Which is a little heartening.

Contributor's Note
Someone who rated this added a comment, it reads too much like an advertisement. Whaaat? Where in the whole of this intel is there any advertisement for anything? Or do we have a troll just making a nuisance of themselves? NO reasonable person could possibly think this was an advertisement; what for, powerboat racing which I criticise heavily?
