Recycled Glass

My favourite recycled product is this beautiful wine/beer goblet, hand made from a Grolsch bottle - as seen in the picture below. As the glass isn't melted down, it saves 90% of the energy normally used to make recycled glass, which is normally melted, screened for impurities and used again. The bottom is cut off, and fixed to the upside down neck by fast welding of the glass.

They are beautiful, really good to hold, will hold a half pint bottle's worth of beer, or half a bottle of wine [cheers!] are extremely tough unlike most wine glasses, and can withstand being knocked over by a dog's tail while sitting on a coffee table; empty or full, we've tried both.

Ecotopia stock them, and they can be ordered online, they have a range of recycled, planet friendly products and I'm only just discovering what they have as these were a present I intend to add to, to make up a set. At £6.50 each, they aren't cheap, but they will last for much longer than the average wine glass that the price works out much cheaper. A bit like energy saving lightbulbs, you pay a lot more but they last for a number of years.

Another good recycled product I've come across is place mats/pub mats made from recycled plastics and even circuit boards. They come in a range of colour mixes and some have identifiable component materials and others are more inscrutable. All work perfectly well and are likely to last a lifetime, how energy efficient is that? I have no idea who makes them though. Of course there are lots of recycled packaging around now, and there are some things no one would think of making from virgin pulp paper as was once the case.

If we all purposely seek recycled products to buy, whether paper [which is just as good as virgin paper these days] glass, plastics or metal, we help stimulate a market and the whole field of manufacturing things from recycled materials becomes more profitable and expands organically to satisfy demand. And then we all benefit from less waste, less wasted energy and diminished carbon emissions.

Our responsibility doesn't end with putting stuff in a different sack or bin marked recycle, it has to be recycled into something.

And for the moron who reviewed this and just put 'ad' I would like to point out I have nothing to do with the company which make these, they are doing a great job recycling and I will promote anything which I think is worthwhile, and never for money.
