Protect us from nasties

Among the large numbers of spyware protectors, trojan killers and virus eradicators, not to mention firewalls, all for free it seems, one would think the spreaders of maliciousware would have gone out of business ages ago.

Truth is, many of these so-called 'free' system scanners and protectors are only free as far as the scanning goes, your system is thoroughly scanned and a long list of infections marked from normal to panic is laid before you. To do anything about it now you know your precious is spilling every bean there is in information about you and your surfing habits, and is probably being used by hackers to send spam across the universe. A click away, the site offers total clean-up and disinfecting, plus vaccination, but for a price. So the 'free' offer was no more than a slick advertising trick.

Amongst this crowd of 'sentinel' programs, I've found one which when it says it's free actually is free. Once installed, every function it possesses, and they're pretty awesome, is available to you. My only precautionary would be go easy, until you understand the powerful tools under your control. You can lock down your system so that it's invisible to anyone else, clean up tracking cookies after every browsing session, scan your system regularly for anything nasty that somehow managed to sneak in - nobody's perfect - and it lets you sleep easy at night.

With Russia getting a lot of criticism these days as the home of spammers and scammers, it's nice to say this program is from St Petersburg, where a group of programmers, with a little help from the University, have developed a pretty effective privacy tool. Did I mention it can even encrypt your emails if you feel the need? Obviously in Russia there is still felt to be some threat from the state, but we must also be aware that Western governments are routinely scanning all our mail these days, not to mention the commercial interests which want to know everything about us so they can compete more efficiently for our money.

The name of this excellent program, and I assure you I have no connection with it other than having found it, tried it out and liked it, is SecureMaker, and you can download it at http://www.securemaker.com/. If your system is seeming a bit slow lately, it's mostly likely garbage left lying around by programs which don't uninstall properly, or temp files that Microsoft have never seen fit to tell Windows to clean up after it. SecureMaker is a happy little robot who gets all of that out and flushes it away for you. It also finds the prying spies some sites leave on your hard disc, and keeps them at bay afterwards. It works with Windows 2000, XP and Vista.

How or why do they do it for free? Well, I think part of the reason is that it's what they do, what they enjoy. I think they have a bit of a mission to give people protection from spying, and also to produce something to be proud of. It's only free for private use, so any businesses wanting to install it must pay, as they should and do, and I guess this provides the SecureMaker team with an income. Word must be getting around what an excellent program it is by now.

I've used plenty of programs offering to do what Securemaker does or parts of that, and none have ever prompted me to recommend them, other than Zonealarm I guess, which is pretty much invisible.

I expect SecureMaker will get like that eventually, once I've settled on the settings in each section which work best with me, it will be something in the background keeping my PC running smoothly and to maximum effiency.
