Printer cartridges - is genuine best?

We all know that printers are so cheap these days because the manufacturer makes up the cost with refills, which are anything but cheap. Warnings are contained in the packaging of the printer against using anything but GENUINE XXX cartridges, there is talk of warranties being invalid if anything other than genuine ink is used.

Then there are the 'compatible' cartridges. Offering full compatibility with the famous and trusted brands, these are offered at less than a quarter of the branded cost, sometimes less with three for the price of two offers or half price bargains when online stores need to shift stock that's been around too long.

So I went for an offer, and bought some of these compatible cartridges for my Canon, sat back and waited for them to arrive. They looked more or less the same as the Canon cartidges and said plainly on the box that they were compatible for my Canon model. Then I discovered that all was not quite as simple as I had imagined. Unlike when fitting Canon cartridges, with these I had first to remove a tiny chip from the bottom of the old and insert it into a slot on the new 'compatible' cartridge. This took half an hour, my fingers seemed too large to handle something this tiny, a magnifying glass and tweezers would have helped.

The first colour, the black, clicked into place and continued to blink its light, meaning either empty or not fitted properly. I removed it and replaced it, still blinking. Again. Nothing. Nothing I did stopped it blinking. I moved to the next, magenta, and having already fitted its chip, slipped it into place and clicked it, the light continued to blink. The third empty cartridge, yellow, was replaced with the new one, only that wouldn't bed down and could not be got to click into place. The light continued flashing.

Removing them to try again I managed to stain my hands with magenta ink, it's very bright and indelible, I looked like someone who'd voted, several times, in the Zimbabwean mock election. It's mostly worn off now.

I emailed the company who emailed back saying 'sorry, have returned your payment', so no hassle there, in fact I wonder if it's quite common and covered as part of the margins that some will be refunded. But would I do it again and use 'compatible' cartridges for my precious Canon printer that prints A4 to the edge so good you can't tell it from an A4 photographic print? No way. I'd rather pay for my printer with genuine Canon cartridges, whilst moaning about it, than risk this hassle ever again. I have ordered the genuine replacements and have yet to see if any lasting damage has been done.
