Politicians
The problem with politicians is they are all boxing way above their weight; they are largely inadequate to the task they take on, running a country. Unlike professionals, who have to study, pass exams, and work in their profession for a number of years before being considered experts in it, politicians are all amateurs, few having even studied politics at university, they all make it up as they go along, and many learn nothing, so desperate are they to cover their arse and get re-elected into their overpaid job again. So it's all skewed to looking like they are doing a good job, pleasing their party power-mongers and currying favour with enough electors to keep their snouts in the trough. This is why they do such an appalling job. They mostly have little understanding of their chosen field, such as education, energy or health, and succeed to doing untold damage while in power. The latest decisions by the energy minister Malcolm Wicks is a case in point. The man is clearly not up to the job, in fact he might have difficulty holding down the job of school caretaker, yet feels qualified to make decisions to both re-embrace dangerous nuclear power and now to embark on a new series of coal fired power stations, believing the hype put out by the industry that technology can provide clean power from coal. Education is another area where politicians, rather than leaving it to the professional educators, have to fiddle about constantly, with the result that our education system in the UK, once the envy of most of the world, is now pathetic, turning out kids who know how to do projects, know how to pass multiple-answer exam questions, but know little of their subjects. It's all done in bite-sized chunks for the little dears who mustn't be overstressed, as many adults were when discipline still existed and exams meant something. Now the latest fiddler, the truly inadequate but aptly named Ed Balls, is fiddling again, and will further damage education in Britain. To see him grinning like a moron and mouthing insults at the tories on the front benches is a sight indeed. The country must live with these decisions, sometimes for decades. With education, it blights children's lives, with energy it could blight all our lives.
