Paper from waste
Paper can be made from many plant-based materials; wood pulp, hemp, cotton and even grass, although the way it is made from grass is a little more indirect than the other sources. With grass, another animal is employed to help in the process; an elephant, and the paper is called elephant dung paper. The process starts with the elephants eating, as they do frequently. The dung is collected and boiled to sterilise it and then pulped to chop any long fibres up, it is then mixed with paddy - the left over waste from rice growing. The pulp is then spread out on trays and squeezed to exclude excess water, and provide a smooth, flat surface, and is then left to dry. The resulting paper is off white and has small pieces of vegetable matter visible within it. It can be dyed to a variety of pastel shades, but always retains the texture. It is easy enough to write on, if slightly rougher than commercial wood-pulp paper produced by large mills with heated rollers. Elephant dung paper is made in Sri Lanka. It is mostly sold to NGOs working to defeat poverty in 3rd world countries such as Oxfam, and can be found in notebooks, diaries and such like 'fair trade' prodcuts in Oxfam shops. |
