Nectar

I got a nectar card a while back, seemed no reason not to as I shop at Sainsbury's and it's their store card, so you get points added whenever you shop. But it's more than that, it is used by other merchants such as BP garages, so when you buy fuel you also get points.

So the simple store card has now morphed into the electronic equivalent of Green Shield Stamps - which now feature in the collectibles section on ebay - in encouraging consumers to shop at certain firms, those which subscribe to the scheme. As long as too many don't subscribe, it may make a marginal difference to shopping habits for some people, but I never notice what shop or garage is part of it, and often don't realise unless asked if I have a nectar card when paying, so to me it's just a unasked for bonus. Of course there's also the issue of the database and them having masses of data on my shopping habits. I should worry.

Having amassed a considerable number of points over time, I recently spent some of them to make the whole exercise have some point, and chose a watch as my old ones expired years ago and despite having got out of the habit of needing to know the time constantly, I thought it might come in useful some times. I also bought a crab apple tree for the wildlife, it is in a large pot and budding already. Eventually it will feed thousands of birds and small mammals, a gift from me to the planet. The watch is heavier than I expected, solid chunky chrome thing, quite satisfyingly heavy in a techie kind of way, with a dial round the face and is shock proof, water proof and probably bullet proof. But the strap's too long so I shall have to have a link removed before I can wear it. That's the problem when you shop with a nectar car.
