Motoring in the slow lane
The UK government has decided, as a measure to tackle congestion on the roads network, to allow traffic to use the hard shoulder on motorways as another lane. Rather than actually do something about the swelling numbers of cars on the roads, and the inevitable worsening of the UK's carbon emissions, they have put it off till later by alloing another lane. The hard should was built and has been used as a place where broken down drivers can park their car while they summon help; they have telephones at intervals as they were mostly built before mobile phones became commonplace. But just because people now have mobiles doesn't mean they won't break down. Stopping on the hard shoulder will now be much more dangerous, if you stop, you won't be sure someone won't come steaming up and smack right into you. You'd think a slower lane inside the slow lane would be safe enough, but I've seen people driving at 70mph in the slow lane, and even using it to overtake people in the middle lane in excess of 80mph. A head on crash with a stationary vehicle at that speed is wipeout. If it's a truck, which is likely, there wouldn't be a lot left of most cars. My advice would be, if you break down on a motorway, get off the road as far as you can and then run away from it before you are totalled by some idiot making a mobile phone call. This merely puts off to later the problem of increasing cars and pollution, but it does it dangerously. |
