If you see a dog
You see them all over the place. Dogs left tied to a railing or fence, looking anxiously, usually in one fixed directio - where their human disappeared from sight. Most people don't bother to tell their dog anything, so how would they know? How do they know they haven't been abandoned? They may have been left before, even at that very spot, but for dogs everything is unexpected and up for grabs, they don't take things for granted like humans. That's why they are overjoyed when you return home to them. As far as they knew, you were never going to return until the moment you did, so joy is the natural reaction. I always go and speak with dogs left alone and tied up. I chat to them, stroke them, reassure them their human will be back soon and what a good dog they are waiting patiently. They appreciate it. Today, a dog I was saying hi to laid his head on my knee and moved his head so my stroke could get to that bit under the chin - up a bit, over a bit, yessss - that he really liked scratched. A small thing, but much appreciated. So say hallo to the next dog you see tied up and waiting anxiously, you'll help to ease her wait, always an anxious time, separated from those she loves and who care for her and feed her, their disappearance could be a disaster if they don't return. |
