If you fly, plant a tree
If you fly frequently you are contributing a lot of carbon to climate change, and even if you only fly once a year, this still adds a big whack to the equation. If you want to be part of the solution, instead of part of the problem, there's an easy way to do it; plant trees. Tree seeds are easy to come by, walk around under trees in autumn and you'll see their seeds lying on the ground in grerat profusion, pick up the fatter shinier looking ones and take them home. You can plant them whenever you like, but spring is best, especially if you plan to raise them in pots for the first few years rather than just planting them in the soil somewhere. The chances of them making it to fully mature trees that way is way lower than if you nurse them past the first few years until you have a healthy saplings. If planting in a pot, make sure the soil or compost is very moist and bury the seed at least two inches below the surface. Then place the pot in a quiet place where it won't be disturbed, and leave it, visiting occasionally to ensure it hasn't dried out. If you plant in the spring, it won't be long before a shoot appears above the soil. Make sure it's got plenty of moisture and place it in the sun out of the way. Do not forget your seedlings! If the soil dries out they will die. You can plant out at any time, but it's best to wait as long as possible as the tree will stand a much better chance the older and stronger it is. Find a quiet spot in the countryside which looks as if it can take a tree - not too near a road or private property, out of the way of walkers who may trample it without realising. Visit it when you can in the first year to check it is ok, and carry a bottle of water in case the soil where it is becomes dry before it has sent down sufficient roots to get moisture from lower down. If you are a heavy flyer [try to reduce as much as you can] you will need to plant lots of trees. If an infrequent flyer, a few trees helps to offset the load you put on the ecosystem. There's no hard and fast rule about it, just plant what you feel is enough, and then a few more. Trees that are easy to grow include: beech, oak, chestnut, horse chestnut, poplar, birch and rowan. Even if you don't fly, it's still a good idea to plant trees as Earth has been losing trees at a horrendous rate for centuries and we need all we can get. Your lifestyle is hardly likely to be carbon neutral, so you still need to offset all the rest of your activities. And if you're an American [like the one who left a remark here] who thinks there are more trees in north America now than when the white man landed and started cutting them down to build railroads, towns and wagons, think again. The forest fires alone this year - all started by humans - have destroyed hundreds of thousands of trees. |
