Freelancing
Having freelanced most of my life, and none of the jobs I've had lasting for a year or less, I often find it hard to imagine why so many people shy away from the freelance life and rely totally on someone else to provide them with the means of earning a living. Some 'workers' even march for the 'right to work', although what they mean is the 'right to be provided with work' which strikes me as a non right. No one owes anyone else a living. If someone who's started a company with an idea feels they need help running it, they may offer a job to someone at a set rate of pay and 'employ' them. But they owe them nothing. There is no right to a job, let alone a job for life as some sectors of workers seem to think. With a world recession bearing down lots of people with jobs are going to be without jobs. This to many is disaster, the stuff of nightmares, how will they cope, how will they eat? Depression sets in making them even less able to do something about their situation, they wallow in self pity and try to blame anyone but themselves for having no income. But there is a solution and that's to go freelance. It doesn't matter where your skills lie, there are always opening for keen, industrious, hard-working freelances to make a living. It isn't easy, it's hard work and long hours, and sometimes you wonder why you do it when people with jobs seem to have no worries, an increase every year and can walk away from it at the end of the day without a thought, whereas the freelance is embedded to the job 24/7. But it also represents freedom; you CAN just take off and waste a day in the country or doing something you really enjoy. You can start work at whatever time you decide, and finish the same way, although this usually means working till eight or later. But the main benefit is you are beholden to no one, you ARE your own boss, and no one can come and order you about, criticise your dress, or make threats about sacking you unless you 'develop a good attitude'. You can't be sacked. All you have are your clients, and if you treat them right they will stick with you, because as long as you do the work to their satisfaction and on time, and treat them as if they are special [they are to you] they will stay with you, why should they go elsewhere with the risk of the unknown that entails? |
