Extreme weather events
A huge gale is threaterned for the UK for next Monday [11 March 2008] which is set to be the biggest since the hurricane of whenever it was. On the BBC website it says: 'Saturday 8 March EARLY WARNING An intense area of low pressure is forecast cross the UK on Monday. Both wind and rain will be notable with potential for disruption to transport and power supplies. England and Wales look most at risk at the moment, with gusts of wind up to 70mph, locally 80mph for exposed coasts and hills'. http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ukweather/ So looks like a big one with trees down [how many more trees can we lose?] and doubtless some chimneys and roofs as well. A few high sided trucks will blow over on the M6 as always happens whenever it's windy, and a lot of rubbish will be spread around, but as teenagers do this all the time, it won't be noticeably worse. I enjoy extreme weather events, I love the feel of the power of the elements, and the feeling of powerlessness as a mere tiny naked ape in the vastness of the planetary ecosystem. Hard to accept that we've changed it, but when there are as many humans as there are now, it's easier to see how; it's like termites moving nest, each carries one small thing but together they can move a collosal amount. Sheer numbers. I think it does humans good to fully realise that we are quite puny against the full power of nature. |
