End of the party
I have noticed that a few intel I've written which have mentioned in passing climate change [global warming] as being caused by us, which I take as a given having studied the subject for more than twenty years, have got the odd remark implying I haven't produced any evidence or references to evidence, or just baldly denying it is anything to do with us. This is typical for those few who still stick their necks out and claim that 'some scientists dispute it' who, without understanding any of the science, read something somewhere on the net and adopt it as their 'intellectual position'. But I have news for them, it isn't a scientific position, there isn't any science supporting this idea, all climate scientists are in agreement; we have contributed to global warming. What these denial merchants don't understand is that all science is about disproving something, not proving it. A theory is advanced and then tested. If the conclusions appear to support a thesis, it is then put forward for peer review, where others skilled in the field attempt to disprove it. This is what science is all about, it is the very opposite to religion where ideas are 'respected' merely because someone holds them, no proof is required. So for twenty or more years lots of highly trained and skilled scientists have been examining data from many diverse sources across the planet, and the overwhelming conclusion of all of them is - climate change is caused by us. No room for doubt, no might bes or could bes, this is it, it's definite, and we had better pay attention and do something or we could end up obsolete and extinct like the dinosaurs. And if you think logically about it - rather than refusing to accept it with no good reason - if you burn the accumulated carbon deposits from millions of years of storage in the space of a couple of hundred years, there's a very good chance you will return the Earth's atmosphere to what it was before the carboniferous age sequestered vast amounts of carbon and replaced it with oxygen, and allowed oxygen-breathing animals to evolve in the changed atmosphere. We've been digging it up and burning it as if there was no tomorrow, and now there might not be. The opposers to accepting responsibility, at last, for what we've done, are surly and belligerent, they don't want to change their selfish lifestyle and resent anyone who reminds them that's precisely what is necessary. They cling to the belief that somewhere scientists have disproved a 'theory of global warming' just like their fellow idiots cling to the belief that evidence exists for creation as opposed to evolution, it doesn't. The party is coming to an end. Humanity must now grow up and act like adults rather than spoiled children who want everything and want it now. Unless we adapt to an ecologically sustainable lifestyle we are doomed to oblivion. We may think we are strong and clever and can always adapt our technology to help us when things get tough, but in planetary terms we are merely as mosquitos on the back of an elephant. We depend totally on the ecosystem to provide our food, despite what the promoters of GM claim, and we upset the balance at our peril. |
