Dogs and arthritis
Just like humans, many dogs too suffer from arthritis in their joints, with some breeds being particularly vulnerable. Vets will often prescribe painkillers and steroids if it is a bad case, but these can have side effects and are only treating the symptoms, not the cause. The best remedy for arthritis for dogs, as it is with humans, is glucosamine. It isn't a drug, it's an amino sugar and a prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids, and it has no side effects being a naturally occuring substance, but its effect on the animal can sometimes be miraculous. A German Shepherd we had years ago was becoming increasingly disabled with arthritis in her back hips, found it impossible to get up stairs or into a car without help, and was clearly in some discomfort. As she was ten years old, this was more or less to be expected. We started giving her glucosamine daily, and within a very short space of time she was so much improved that she could leap into and out of the car, walk upstairs unaided and enjoyed several years of exploring the forest near our new home. Our present two dogs have just been started on it, both being past eight, as we want to avoid the onset of arthritis if at all possible. They are both medium sized dogs - a Belgian Groenendhal and a Lurcher/Dalmation cross - and like to run, so best to be ahead of any joint problems. Dogs can take the same glucomine tablets as are sold for humans, although small dogs would probably be best with half a tablet, if only to save cost. I usually wrap them in a piece of bread and they go down in an instance. The ones we have at the moment are from Nature's Best - http://www.naturesbest.co.uk/, and contain chondroitin sulphate as well, another useful joint treatment. Chondroitin sulphate is an important structural component of cartilage and provides much of its resistance to compression. Along with glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate has become a widely used dietary supplement for treatment of osteoarthritis. I took advantage of a special offer for three drums of the tablets at a very low price, and this is a quite frequent occurance in the UK, with Holland and Barret - http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/, often having 50% off offers, or even 75% off! Well worth shopping around when the time comes to restock. There are branches of Holland and Barrett in most High Streets in the UK, and other countries have their equivalent when products like glucosamine can be purchased. Medical opinion varies, despite clinical trials showing improvement in sufferers, but there are always some who will dismiss something just because it isn't the usual chemical fix they are used to prescribing. I hate to see old dogs limping along, clearly in pain, and unwilling to run and enjoy life, and often recommend glucosamine to their owners, some of whom look as if they could benefit from it themselves. I take it every day along with the dogs, we are all mammals after all, and our joints are very similar, our pain too. |
