Dog bites

In 2006, over 20% of people needing hospital treatment for dog bites were children under nine years of age. Now yet another dog has bitten a child in the UK. It's always the fault of an adult, but the poor dog is killed out of hand. That it was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier is irrelevent, there are no dangerous dog breeds, only dangerous human owners. I know a Staffy, she's a gentle, loving creature, always pleased to see people she knows, and friendly towards people she doesn't know. If she'd been owned all her life by some inbred scrote with a macho problem, she might have grown up nervous, snappy, defensive and likely to bite if the circumstances made her feel threatened.

My dogs are totally soft, loving and under control. If a stranger visits, there's a bit of noise; a mix of greeting and warning, it's what dogs do. I make sure they are under control and past the initial excitement and then I can relax, I don't assume there's nothing to worry about and pay no attention. When children visit I am even more vigilant as children are a) closer to a dog's height, b) liable to do something unexpected, c) might trip over the dog, with the possibility it feels it's under attack. As long as dogs are socialised, loved, and treated with discipline, there's not a problem.

Too many people get a puppy, taunt and tease it, give it no training or discipline, and allow the dog to display aggression; often it's why these inadequates get a dog, and explains why they are invariably Staffies or other so-called 'fighting' dogs, or Rottweilers or other 'big and fierce' dogs. There are no checks or controls, no licence or examination, no home checks.

This should change. We should reinstate the dog licence, but make it a more meaningful document than the old one was. It should depend on a vet's visit to check the home is suitable, interview with respective owner to check the human is suitable, and advice on how to care for the animal with good food, and regular vet examinations and vaccinations. The dogs should be chipped and the owner's name and address registered. The trade in dogs could thus be more controlled at present where anyone can get a bitch impregnated and sell the puppies to any scrote with the money. Only registered dog breeders should be allowed to sell dogs, apart from rescue centres, and all breeders should be regulated and periodically inspected.

Prospective dog owners, especially those with no previous experience, should be educated about what it involves to have a dog, how to treat them, how to train them, how to control them. It is never the dog's fault if they attack anyone, it is always the owner's fault. If a dog is shown to be uncontrollable and efforts to retrain and socialise fail and no one is available to take them on with any attendant risks, then, and only then, should a dog be killed.

The knee-jerk reaction to shoot a dog which has bitten someone, often done by a purported animal welfare organisation, the RSPCA, is unconscionable and indefensible. Dogs can make mistakes, usually because they feel threatened, that's no reason why a death sentence should be imposed. We don't kill human mass murderers now, a supposed advance in our development, why should a dog be killed for just a bite?
