Do we need shampoo?

Many people in the 'developed' world buy products which they are convinced are essential to their lives, yet many in other parts of the world live without them with no ill effects. Take shampoo for instance; many people agonise over which brand to buy, which is going to give them luscious, clean hair, they wash their hair incessantly, often daily, and would feel bereft if they were unable to get their usual brand, and devastated if no shampoo was available.

Prepared to pay 'through the nose' [lovely expression] for what is actually just a small amount fossil-fuel-based detergent with a bit of colouring and perfume, the idea that it is of no value would be resisted. Yet it is completely possible to wash your hair in water, hot, warm or cold, and get it clean. I do it regularly in the shower, rubbing and kneading the hair with what amounts to a scalp massage, and the result is soft, clean feeling hair just like the shampoo makers advertise their product as providing!

Animals don't use shampoo. The poor of the world don't use shampoo, only the relatively rich, with money to spare on non-essentials, think shampoo is one thing they can't live without. Yet water is the universal cleanser, it carries away dirt and oils leaving the hair clean and manageable, all it takes is a little help with the fingers. It doesn't remove so much oil that you have to replace it with conditioner in order for the hair to be 'healthy' as is the case with detergent, which is also used in industrial cleaning processes, yet if you asked most people if they would put industrial cleaners on their hair they would deny it.

This obsession with ultra clean hair which the pharmaceutical industry has brainwashed people with could be having long term effects; perhaps the increasing incidence of relatively young men losing their hair is a direct result of this constant degreasing of the scalp. Thirty or forty years ago, baldness was only seen in old men, an occasional case of hair loss in younger men was always a result of a disease or condition, and often temporary, Now, many men under thirty are bald or near bald [shaving their head to hide the fact that the hairline has reduced radicly]. Could it be the result of shampoo use? Will we have to wait a lot longer until scientists have 'discovered' that detergent actually damages human hair follicles?

Why not give it a try? Try washing your hair in warm water, with plenty of vigorous rubbing with the tips of the fingers. If nothing else it could save you money, at best it could save your hair!

Lucy Sutton, a trainee marketing executive, after three weeks not using shampoo after being challenged to try going without, said 'Looking back, I can see how much I’ve been damaging my hair by doing so much to it. My hair always looked neat, but I think it was lifeless - the shampoo was taking all the natural oils out of it. Since I stopped using shampoo, my hair has more volume, and I’m astonished to find it has a natural wave - I always thought it was just straight and boring.' And BBC presenter Andrew Marr has given up washing his hair with shampoo, saying the scalp's natural oils will keep it glossy and clean.

If this doesn't satisfy you, there are plenty of non-fossil-fuel shampoos available which are likely to be much better for you than detergent. A simple homemade herbal "shampoo" can be made using Soapwort Root (Saponaria officinalis), which foams and is suitable for all hair types. Soapwort contains saponins which are similar to soap in their action, lathering when agitated.
