Cyber criminals targeting Valentine's Day

Cyber criminals are believed to have launched a renewed campaign to invade millions of home computers across the world with a trojan, creating an international network of infected computers which can be used to send spam or launch cyber attacks on websites - without the owner's knowledge. The campaign is likely to peak on or around St Valentine's Day, the day of the year when people are most likely to click on an anonymous email and open the link inside, especially if it says 'A message of love from an admirer'.

So DON'T CLICK ON ANYTHING YOU DON'T RECOGNISE! The only way these scumbags get anywhere is because people just can't force themselves to delete suspicious mail, they just have to take a peek and, wham, the infection is in and working it's evil. Of course, everyone should have anti-virus and anti-spyware protection which would ring alarm bells as soon as an attempt was made to install anything, but it seems many don't despite there being lots of free programs available on the net, and are sitting ducks to the cyber criminals.

Much of the spam that blights our lives is delivered from innocent computers that have been hijacked in this way. They become proxy senders for the criminals, making it even more difficult to trace where they originated.

Many addresses are harvested from websites, thus many site owners, having to use an email address use spelling out to avoid the address being gathered by a bot, such as 'myname at mydomain.com', with instructions to change the and to the symbol @. This is a messy way of doing it.

Another method of foiling these pests is to place on your website somewhere a link to Spampoison at http://english-70754684732.spampoison.com These links will redirect email harvesting bots to trap sites that will feed it with an almost infinite loop of dynamically generated fake email addresses, mostly on known spammer owned domains! This will render their harvested lists practically useless and of no commercial value, so they can't even sell them.

Remember: Don't click on anything in emails you don't recognise the sender of. Especially coming up to Valentine's Day, but also all year round. Once infected, it can be a long process cleaning the infection out, and no guarantee you won't lose valuable files along the way.
