Converting a car to run on gas
Today, it's possible to drive your car into a garage on petrol, and drive away a few days later on gas. But if you can't afford commercial LPG conversions [at around £1,000 in the UK], and own an older production line, petrol-engined car [not high-powered, computer-controlled or fuel-injected], are pretty handy with car mechanics, bothered by the pollution you are adding to the environment and the escalating price of fuel, and fancy running your car on a cleaner and cheaper fuel than petrol [and have a few basic tools] you could always do it yourself. If you have an older car and engine which has a carburetor and distributor [including generators and other standalone engines], you can convert it to run on gas without too much time and effort. You'll need a short list of tools necessary for the job, as well as a list of [inexpensive] parts needed to do your own gas conversion, and instructions on how to do it. My book, 'Petrol to Gas - a DIY Guide to Gas Conversion' [ISBN 0 952253216 1 6] outlines a method that is cheap to perform and within the abilities of most people with some experience beyond emptying the ashtray and putting in oil. It doesn't lead you by the hand, but it does give step-by-step instructions, and, while all cars are different, the basic procedure is clearly outlined for you to follow. Although some may find it a bit 'belt and braces', preferring to buy a complete, tailor-made kit, for others, budget is everything. This is guaranteed the cheapest conversion method ever. Petrol to Gas is a DIY gas conversion guide for converting a car to run on liquid petroleum gas [with the gas bottle secured in the boot, or a gas tank fitted under the car], or to be a dual fuel vehicle using LPG or petrol at the flick of a switch. It is not a conversion kit, you must assemble the parts you need yourself, but they are easy to come by and not at all specialist. Call it what you will; biogas, green fuel, UNIGAS, Liquid Petroleum Gas, LPG, auto gas, or CNG, this guide shows how to convert your car to run on clean fuel, which is less damaging for the environment, motoring with gas, the environmental fuel of the future, with fuel economy and no effect on performance. Clean fuels offer motoring that can make a difference, and as well as cleaner motoring, it will also save you money by halving the cost of your fuel. Now LPG is available at many petrol filling stations, you can even buy a refillable gas bottle, which you can fill as normal 'at the pumps'. Or, if cost is at a premium, you can stick with the normal camping gas bottles and change them as necessary. It's extremely satisfying running a car you converted to gas, and good for your wallet too, it will pay back the cost of this ebook very quickly. The book also includes pages of links to related sites; LPG converters, LPG kits, advice, information and answers to any questions not answered here. As one reviewer has remarked that it's 'not legal here' without saying where 'here' is, I should add that this book was written for and about the UK where it IS legal. They also claimed that bottled gas and LPG aren't interchangeable, well, there's not a huge amount of difference between any of the fuel gases, whether they come from fossil fuel production [LPG] or biomass digestion [methane]. Obviously adjustments have to be made depending on which fuel, but they are combustible gases so the method of conversion is as relevent to each. You can use prebottled gas or you can buy a refillable cylinder and fill it at the pumps. |
