Affect - Effect Many people have difficulty with these two rather similar words, and even competent speakers/writers can occasionally stumble on which one fits their need in a sentence. Perhaps it will help to elaborate their meanings with some examples. Affect: Usually a verb, meaning to cause change to something or someone. As in 'He noticed that the crash had affected him adversely'. or 'Whatever you do, it won't affect me'. Effect: Usually a noun, meaning the result of something acting upon something else as in 'the effect of the anaesthetic had still not worn off' or 'the crash had the effect of making her very nervous'. So the effect is the result of something affecting something or someone else. We can even write 'His effect on her affected him deeply' But it wouldn't be stylistically cool! Effect is also less commonly used as a verb, as in 'She effected a stylish languor to entice him' [meaning she pretended, or posed as]. But generally speaking, an effect is the result of affecting and affect is what causes an effect. Simple innit?
