A child disappears
There are so many inconsistencies and strange aspects to the case of the disappearing child Madeleine McCann that it's not odd that many feel that something is not right, and suspicion naturally falls on the parents. I was struck from the start with how composed they both were; parents of other missing children have been visibly distraght, barely keeping it together, prone to sudden tears and emotional outburst, I think I would too in those circumstances. But the McCanns were different and not just because they were both doctors. There seemed an air of unreality about them, as if they were 'playing' the role of distraught parents while not experiencing it. The father, Gerry McCann, seemed more angry than worried, his face often contorted with something but not grief or panic. The mother Kate McCann seemed distant and cold, prone to acts calculated to elicit sympathy such as clutching her daughter's small toy constantly; this toy, we later found out, had been washed immediately after Madeleine disappeared. Why would a mother do that? Wouldn't she want it to smell of her daughter rather than a washing detergent? They appeared to milk the media with planned walkabouts to which all the media were invited. Then there was the tour, complete with media, which took in the Vatican for a well publicised meeting with the Pope where he blessed a photograph[!]. Very media savvy, very controlling. Unlike the normal actions of grieving, out of their heads with worry, parents of a missing toddler. Then we had the photographs; a succession of many many photographs, released in small numbers or singly to satisfy the media's appetite. Then a few video shots; going on holiday, on the plane, arriving and the first days. Almost as if this was being shot for a purpose other than the usual family holiday shots. Gerry McCann has remained looking surley and arrogant. He's clearly a control freak, and tales coming out of the holiday village tell of him off playing tennis most of the time, and his wife complaining that he never shared the job of looking after the children. While this is true of many men, it doesn't sit well with the concerned father role he's been playing since. Kate McCann is clearly highly strung, a nervous person, with a lot hidden. I've seen no interview where she appeared to be genuinely communicating. Hidden depths, but I wonder what they hide.
